Legal challenge to protect National Park and Green Belt
CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire mount a legal challenge to protect National Park and Green Belt from A57 Link Roads bid.
Although we primarily focus on protecting and enhancing West Yorkshire’s countryside and greenbelt, we thought you’d like to hear the news from our friends at CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire on their legal challenge against the A57 link roads.
Earlier this month, CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire announced a challenge to the Department of Transport’s decision to consent to the A57 Link Roads that would ‘invade and split up the Green Belt, encouraging sprawling infill housing development.’
The case, filed with the High Court, questions the legality of permitting large road schemes without assessing the cumulative impact of carbon emissions and failing to consider alternatives which would avoid harming the Green Belt, the National Park and the climate.
CPRE Peak District and South Yorkshire contend that proposed link roads will increase traffic through the Peak District National Park. The potential for dualling the A628 through Longdendale risks increased traffic and development.
