Our Vision

Our Vision
Unlike many environmental charities, CPRE has no vested interests – we own no land, rely solely on donations and grants, and are politically independent.
In West Yorkshire, CPRE works to protect, promote and enhance our amazing, beautiful countryside. We campaign to connect people to their countryside and empower them to shape it. We aim to demonstrate how immensely varied and valuable it is and defend it against threats, including inappropriate developments. We want a countryside that is fit for the 21st century and rises to the challenges posed by climate change.

Walshaw Moor wind farm
Should achieving net zero be at any cost? As West Yorkshire’s countryside charity, CPRE West Yorkshire fully supports the urgent need to tackle the climate crisis and move swiftly towards a net-zero future. The far-reaching consequences of climate change—such as increased flooding, extreme temperature changes, and droughts—are well known. Immediate action is essential to secure a more sustainable world for future generations, and renewable energy is fundamental to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
Controversial Proposals on Protected Landscapes
Recent proposals for a large-scale wind farm at Walshaw Moor* have provoked widespread concern among residents and environmental groups, and the issue continues to generate much discussion. While the project aims to create clean energy, the proposed site lies within one of England’s most environmentally protected landscapes.
In response to Calderdale Council’s 2023 scoping opinion on the wind farm proposal, we urged the Council to ensure that any Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) proceeds in two stages. First, it must determine whether the scheme complies with the Habitats and Species Regulations—a set of UK and European-derived legal protections for rare species and sensitive habitats—before considering all other planning impacts.
We’re working to support the various campaign groups and passionate individuals.

21st Century Countryside
21st Century Countryside is our emerging agenda for the future of West Yorkshire’s countryside (including urban green spaces). This is all about the changes that we’d like to see, and to help make happen, to ensure that the many things people value about the countryside have a real influence on decision-making.
